Protective effect of fermented papaya preparation on stress-induced acute gastric mucosal lesion

چکیده
Stress ulceration is single or multiple mucosal defects with/without bleeding from the gastric mucosa during the physiologic stress. Oxidative stress (OS) is a key pathogenic factor in psychogenic stress-induced acute gastric mucosal lesion (AGML). Fermented papaya preparation (FPP) is reported to have oxygen radical scavenging activity and is effective in OS-related diseases. Here, we investigated the protective effects and the mechanism of action of FPP on stressinduced AGML in rats, induced by water immersion restraint stress (WIRS). Exposure of rats to 6-hour WIRS resulted in the appearance of splinter hemorrhages and mucosal lesions in the stomach. WIRS induced significant increase in lipid peroxidation and decrease in superoxide dismutase-like activity in both the plasma and gastric mucosa. WIRS also significantly increased myeloperoxidase activity together with nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) activation in gastric mucosa. FPP reduced all the above changes. The results suggest that oral administration of FPP provides protection against WIRS-induced AGML through its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties.

Protective effect of Carica papaya L leaf extract against alcohol induced acute gastric damage and blood oxidative stress in rats.
The effects of Carica papaya leaf (CPL) aqueous extract on alcohol induced acute gastric damage and the immediate blood oxidative stress level were studied in rats. The results showed that gastric ulcer index was significantly reduced in rats pretreated with CPL extract as compared with alcohol treated controls. The in vitro studies using 2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picryl-Hydrazyl (DPPH) assay showed stron...
متن کاملThe Protective Effect of Nortriptyline Against Gastric Lesions Induced by Indomethacin and Cold-shock Stress in Rats
Background: Gastric ulcer is among the most serious stomach disorder universally. Several effective drugs are employed in the management of this disease, although there have been adverse effects in some cases. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of nortriptyline to protect against gastric lesions, induced by indomethacin or cold-stress in rats. Methods: Gastric lesions were ind...

clinically used for the treatment of gastric ulcers and gastritis. Takagi and Yano reported that when gefarnate was orally administered to fasted rats for 5 d, the level of hexosamine, an index of gastric mucus, in the pyloric tissue of the stomach increased and that the reduction of hexosamine content in the gastric pyloric tissue of rats with 3 d of water immersion restraint stress (WIRS) was...
متن کاملProtective Effect of Crocin on Gastric Mucosal Lesions Induced by Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Rats
The present study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of crocin on gastric mucosal lesions caused by ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats.Forty male rats were randomly divided into sham, control (I/R injury) and three crocin-pretreated groups. To induce I/R lesions, the celiac artery was clamped for 30 min and then the clamp was removed to allow reperfusion for 3 h. Pretreated-rats rec...
